Blast at New Maersk CFS

11/05/11

A major fire broke out at Maersk’s Container Freight Station (CFS) Annex in Navghar village, on May 11, 2011. The fire, following an explosion in a container yard on Wednesday afternoon, caused one death and injuries to 20 people. The CFS is a storage place for imported consignments, brought in containers after they arrive at JNPT.

The station officer at CIDCO said that more than 35 containers had been destroyed in the fire. The explosion that resulted due to a chemical combustion in one of the plastic drums, could be heard several kilometres away.

More than 15 fire tenders were put in operation to control the fire. However, fire brigade officials could control it only by late evening. They were uncertain as to how much time it would take for them to douse it.

The injured persons are in the age group of 25-35 years and are mostly labourers.

The police have registered an accidental death report as of now and will start investigating into whether there was negligence, a sabotage or an accident only once the fire is doused.

The fire has upset the workers, who alleged that fire safety measures have not been implemented. According to them, there are no private ambulance of the company nor are there hospitals nearby. Also safety procedures had not been followed by the company.

Greek National Truckers Strike

Don’t let it affect your supply chain!

Dear partners,
The Greek National Truckers Union is expected to announce strike in the following weeks Strikes are to begin either on the 23rd of July or on the 23rd of August (most probable date is 23rd of August). Once the strike is announced, we expect it to last at least 10-12 days at least.

During the strike, Union blockades will exist in national roads, port entrances, and airports, while all truckers will be participating in the strike (including container trucks, logistics delivery & pick up trucks, international transport trucks etc.), protesting in this way for the “opening” of their profession by the Greek State, as per EU regulations.

In order to have your customer’s supply chain as unaffected as possible, with the less possible disturbance, please ask your customers to coordinate with their Greek importers/exporters, so that they schedule the shipment for the previous or the following weeks after the strike. In any case, please contact us well in advance, so that we assist you in the coordination of these shipments.

For further contingency schedules even during the strikes, you can contact our dedicated team that will check and advise the best solution for your shipments, as we have done during 2008-09 Port Union Stikes with zero containers trapped, similar trucker strikes in the past, and also during 2010 Icelandic Volcano eruption, so that you can always provide the best for you and your customers, ahead of others!

Clara / Stathis / Sotiris (airops@seair.gr) and John / Chryssa / Effie (seaops@seair.gr) will be at your disposal, advising contingencies for air and sea freight shipments respectively.
